How Cryptomator works with vBoxxCloud

Cryptomator encrypts each file inside the vault separately, including its file name. vBoxxCloud stores the result, but never the key.

  1. 1. Create a vault in your vBoxxCloud folder

With the Cryptomator app you create a vault inside your synced vBoxxCloud folder and choose a strong password. Keep the recovery key somewhere safe for your business.

  2. 2. Files are encrypted on your device

When you save a contract or payroll file into the unlocked vault, Cryptomator encrypts it on your computer before the vBoxxCloud sync uploads it.

  3. 3. vBoxxCloud stores only encrypted data

In vBoxxCloud the vault looks like a folder of files with unreadable names and contents. vBoxx has no password and cannot read them.

  4. 4. You unlock the vault locally

You open the vault with the Cryptomator app, or in vBoxxCloud in your browser. In both cases decryption runs on your own device.

Browser unlocking: decryption stays on your computer

Unlocking a Cryptomator vault in vBoxxCloud in your browser is client-side decryption. Your password and the decrypted files stay in your browser.

How vBoxxCloud unlocks vaults

Client-side decryption in your browser

  • The browser downloads the encrypted files
  • Your password is used only in your browser
  • vBoxx servers never receive the decrypted files
What vBoxxCloud does not do

No server-side decryption

With server-side decryption, a provider would receive your password and decrypt files on its own servers. vBoxxCloud does not unlock Cryptomator vaults this way.

What changes for files inside a Cryptomator vault

Zero-knowledge protection means vBoxxCloud cannot look inside vault files. That has practical consequences your team should know.

Previews

vBoxxCloud cannot show previews of encrypted vault files. Unlock the vault to view them.

Search

Workspace search cannot index the contents or names of files inside the vault.

Sharing

A shared vault file stays encrypted. The recipient also needs the vault password.

Online editing

Vault files cannot be opened in online document editing. Keep shared working files outside the vault.

A common approach: keep HR records, board documents and client contracts in a vault, and keep everyday project files in normal folders with workspace search and real-time co-editing.

FAQ

Cryptomator FAQ

Is vBoxxCloud a Cryptomator-compatible cloud provider?
Yes. Cryptomator is supported with vBoxxCloud, so you can keep a Cryptomator vault in your vBoxxCloud storage. Files you place in the vault are encrypted on your own device by Cryptomator before they are uploaded. vBoxxCloud stores and syncs the encrypted files like any other files, but cannot read their contents or file names. Files outside the vault are stored as normal vBoxxCloud files, with encryption at rest and in transit, and keep features such as previews, search and online editing.
What does zero-knowledge mean for Cryptomator vaults in vBoxxCloud?
Zero-knowledge means that only you hold the key to the files in your Cryptomator vault. Encryption and decryption happen on your device, or in your browser when you unlock a vault in vBoxxCloud. Your vault password is not sent to vBoxx, and vBoxx cannot open the decrypted files. This protection applies to files inside a Cryptomator vault only. It does not change how other files in your vBoxxCloud storage are handled.
How does unlocking a Cryptomator vault in the browser work?
When you unlock a vault in vBoxxCloud in your web browser, the decryption runs locally in your browser. The browser downloads the encrypted files and decrypts them on your computer with the password you enter. The password and the decrypted contents stay in your browser and are not sent to vBoxx servers. This is client-side decryption, not server-side decryption. When you close the vault or the browser tab, the decrypted view is gone.
Can I preview, search, share or edit files inside a Cryptomator vault?
Not in the same way as normal vBoxxCloud files. Because vBoxxCloud only sees encrypted data, it cannot create previews, index the contents for search or open the files in online editing. If you share an encrypted vault file, the recipient receives encrypted data and also needs the vault password to read it. Use a Cryptomator vault for files that need the highest confidentiality, and keep files you want to search, preview or edit together outside the vault.
What happens if I forget my vault password?
Your vault password is never sent to vBoxx, so vBoxx support cannot reset it or recover your files for you. Cryptomator offers a recovery key when you create a vault. Store this recovery key in a safe place, such as a company password manager, so your business can still open the vault if a password is lost.
